Istanbul Music Festival in Istanbul
The Istanbul Music Festival is Turkey's oldest and most established classical music event, launched in 1973 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Republic. Held every June, it brings international orchestras, chamber ensembles and soloists into Byzantine churches, Ottoman courtyards and modern concert halls across the city.
When the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts organized the first Istanbul Festival in the summer of 1973, the goal was as much political as artistic: the young republic was marking its fiftieth anniversary, and its cultural leaders wanted an event that could stand alongside the great European summer festivals while showcasing Istanbul's unmatched layering of Byzantine, Ottoman and modern history.
