The story

Istanbul Music Festival in Istanbul

The Istanbul Music Festival is Turkey's oldest and most established classical music event, launched in 1973 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Republic. Held every June, it brings international orchestras, chamber ensembles and soloists into Byzantine churches, Ottoman courtyards and modern concert halls across the city.

When the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts organized the first Istanbul Festival in the summer of 1973, the goal was as much political as artistic: the young republic was marking its fiftieth anniversary, and its cultural leaders wanted an event that could stand alongside the great European summer festivals while showcasing Istanbul's unmatched layering of Byzantine, Ottoman and modern history.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few classical festivals stage concerts inside a sixth-century Byzantine church one night and a Sultan's palace courtyard the next, but the Istanbul Music Festival does exactly that, using venues such as Hagia Irene inside Topkapi Palace and the Sureyya Opera House as part of its regular circuit

02

The mystery stays covered

Organized by IKSV since 1973, it has hosted Itzhak Perlman, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Daniel Barenboim and Lang Lang, and it commissions new contemporary works rather than only programming standard repertoire

03

The city starts moving

Now past its fiftieth edition, it remains the region's most established platform for building classical-music audiences in a city better known for its Ottoman and Byzantine layers than its concert halls

What moves first

Living ritual

The festival grew out of Turkey's 1973 Republic jubilee celebrations and continues IKSV's practice of pairing Western classical repertoire with Byzantine and Ottoman architectural settings

Water and renewal

Living ritual

treating historic religious and palace spaces as concert halls rather than museum pieces

The sacred route

Living ritual

Commissioning new Turkish and international compositions each year keeps the festival tied to contemporary composition rather than only preserving a historical repertoire

Getting around

Istanbul Music Festival is easier when the venue, route and way back from Istanbul are chosen before the day starts.

What to wear

Smart-casual to formal for evening concerts in venues like the Sureyya Opera House; a light jacket or shawl helps in stone courtyards and Hagia Irene, which stay cool even on warm June...

Safety

At Istanbul Music Festival, agree on a meeting point and plan food, water and the return route before crowds thicken.
