Istanbul Puppet Festival in Istanbul
Founded around 1997 by artistic director Cengiz Ozek, the International Istanbul Puppet Festival reached its 27th edition in 2025, running late October into early November across venues in Beyoglu. It centers on reviving Turkey's Karagoz shadow theatre tradition while bringing international puppetry artists to Istanbul.
When Cengiz Ozek founded what became the International Istanbul Puppet Festival roughly three decades ago, his goals were explicitly preservationist: revive interest in Karagoz, Turkey's traditional shadow-puppet theatre, and bring internationally recognized puppetry artists to an Istanbul audience that had few chances to see the form performed live.
