The story

Istanbul Puppet Festival in Istanbul

Founded around 1997 by artistic director Cengiz Ozek, the International Istanbul Puppet Festival reached its 27th edition in 2025, running late October into early November across venues in Beyoglu. It centers on reviving Turkey's Karagoz shadow theatre tradition while bringing international puppetry artists to Istanbul.

When Cengiz Ozek founded what became the International Istanbul Puppet Festival roughly three decades ago, his goals were explicitly preservationist: revive interest in Karagoz, Turkey's traditional shadow-puppet theatre, and bring internationally recognized puppetry artists to an Istanbul audience that had few chances to see the form performed live.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Organizers state the festival has brought more than 200 international performances to Turkey over its history, run continuously under founder Cengiz Ozek as an independently produced event rather than a municipal one, occasionally partnering with institutions like Uskudar Municipality and Akbank Sanat

02

The mystery stays covered

Its founding purpose was explicitly to promote Karagoz, Turkey's traditional shadow-puppet theatre, and the program still includes hands-on workshops teaching traditional Karagoz production techniques using materials like animal hide and traditional cutting tools called nevrekan, alongside academic talks and exhibitions on the shadow-theatre tradition
