The story

Uganda International Marathon in Masaka

Uganda International Marathon is Uganda's largest sports-fundraising event, held annually in Masaka since its first run on May 24, 2015. Races of 42km, 21km, and 10km all start and finish at Liberation Square in central Masaka, drawing international runners who combine the race with a week of pre-race tourism activities. The event has raised over 2 billion Ugandan shillings, roughly 930,000 US dollars, for community development projects in the surrounding region.

Each year in late May, the town of Masaka in central Uganda becomes the starting and finishing point for the country's largest sports-fundraising event.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this marathon apart is its direct, quantified link to community development: the event has raised over 2 billion Ugandan shillings, roughly 930,000 US dollars, funding local development projects around Masaka, making it explicitly a fundraising event as much as an athletic competition, and Uganda's largest event of this kind

02

The mystery stays covered

Runners can choose from three distances, 42km, 21km, and 10km, all sharing the same start and finish at Liberation Square, so elite marathoners and casual participants take part in the same central event

03

The city starts moving

The race is paired with a full week of pre-race tourism activities, giving international runners the chance to visit the same community projects their fundraising helps support
