Vyshyvanka Day Ukraine in Kyiv/Regional cities
World Vyshyvanka Day is a cultural holiday celebrated on the third Thursday of May, when Ukrainians at home and abroad wear vyshyvankas, traditional embroidered shirts, as an everyday expression of national identity rather than a costume for a special occasion. It began in 2006 as a student initiative at Chernivtsi University and has since spread to roughly 50 countries.
World Vyshyvanka Day began with a single idea from Lesia Voroniuk, a student at Yuriy Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University who suggested in 2006 that she and her classmates pick one day and wear embroidered vyshyvanka shirts together.
