The story

Festival of Ukrainian Spirit Bandershtat in Lutsk

Bandershtat is an all-Ukrainian festival of Ukrainian spirit held every summer in and around Lutsk, Volyn region, since its founding in 2007, built as a deliberately alcohol-free gathering of Ukrainian alternative music, national identity, and youth activism that organizers describe as an art-visiting-card for the whole Volyn region.

Bandershtat began in 2007 in Lutsk, the capital of Ukraine's Volyn region, and from its first edition it set out to be different from Ukraine's other summer music festivals in a very specific way: it would not serve or permit alcohol.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bandershtat was, according to its own organizer Serhiy Martyniuk, the festival that pioneered the alcohol-free format in Ukraine, a stance later adopted by other festivals including Kholodnyi Yar

02

The mystery stays covered

Its lineup spans the full range of contemporary Ukrainian alternative music styles, and its programming is explicitly value-driven: master classes and activities are designed to promote a pro-Ukrainian mindset, the Ukrainian language and culture, healthy and active living, environmental stewardship, and support for gifted youth, alongside honoring Stepan Bandera as a national symbol, from which the festival takes its punning name (Bandershtat, echoing Banderstadt, Bandera's city/state)
