The story

Odesa Classics in Odesa

Odessa Classics is an international classical music festival founded in 2015 by pianist Alexey Botvinov, held in Odesa every June from 2015 to 2021 with world-class soloists. Since Russia's 2022 invasion made a large festival in Ukraine impossible, it has continued as a touring event across Europe rather than in Odesa itself.

Odessa Classics was founded in 2015 by pianist Alexey Botvinov, quickly establishing itself as, in the festival's own framing, the leading Ukrainian festival on the European circuit.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Odessa Classics assembled an extraordinary roster for a Ukrainian regional festival, featuring violinists Daniel Hope, Joshua Bell, and Maxim Vengerov, pianist Evgeny Kissin, cellist Mischa Maisky, and singers Matthias Goerne and Thomas Hampson, alongside orchestras from Zurich, Berlin, and Brussels, quickly establishing it on the European festival map after its 2015 founding

02

The mystery stays covered

Its wartime adaptation is unusually stark and well documented: unable to safely operate at scale in Odesa since 2022, the festival relocated entirely abroad, staging more than 60 concerts across seven countries between 2022 and 2025, celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2024 not in its home city but through this European touring format
