Sharjah Desert Theatre Festival, now in its ninth consecutive edition, runs each December in the Al-Kahif desert region, staging six specially prepared theatrical productions from across the Arab world, Egypt, the UAE, Qatar, Jordan and Libya among recent participants, on a performance platform built directly among real dunes, valleys and tents rather than an indoor stage.

A performance platform built in the middle of actual dunes and valleys, rather than a stage set to resemble desert terrain, is the defining feature of Sharjah Desert Theatre Festival: organisers construct a temporary desert village extending across a wide area of the Al-Kahif region specifically for the festival's run, then equip the performance space among the real landscape with modern sound and lighting technology suited to open-air desert conditions.
