The story

Sir Bu Nair Festival in Sir Bu Nair Island

The Sir Bu Nair Festival celebrates Sharjah's maritime and pearl-diving heritage across two venues, Al Heera Beach on the mainland and the protected nature reserve of Sir Bu Nair Island roughly 110 kilometers offshore. First held in 2000, the same year the island was declared a protected reserve, the festival reached its 25th, silver jubilee edition in October 2025 with dhow sailing races, coral conservation workshops, and cultural performances.

Before oil transformed the Gulf economy, communities along Sharjah's coast built their livelihoods on the sea, diving for pearls and sailing traditional wooden dhows between fishing grounds and trading ports.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's centerpiece, the Sir Bu Nair Dhow Sailing Race, uses traditional sixty-foot wooden dhows rather than modern sailing vessels, with the 2025 edition drawing more than sixty boats, over a thousand sailors, and prize money exceeding two million dirhams, making it a genuinely competitive revival of a fading maritime skill rather than a symbolic reenactment

02

The mystery stays covered

Because the island itself is a protected nature reserve with limited, registered access, the festival pairs heritage programming, pearl-diving exhibitions and traditional seafaring displays, with active conservation work, including coral reef restoration workshops and guided snorkeling at a coral farm, blending cultural preservation with environmental stewardship in a way few Gulf festivals attempt
