Grand National Festival Aintree in Aintree/Liverpool

The most demanding jump race in British horse racing, run each April at Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool since William Lynn instituted the Grand Liverpool Steeplechase in 1839. Its thirty fences over four miles and two and a half furlongs include Becher's Brook, named after a jockey who fell there in the first official running.

The Grand National was instituted in 1839 by William Lynn, a Liverpool innkeeper, staged at Aintree Racecourse under the name Grand Liverpool Steeplechase before adopting its now-famous title in 1847.
