Royal Ascot in Ascot

Britain's most prestigious flat racing meeting, founded in 1711 by Queen Anne on heathland she judged ideal for horses to gallop. Held each June near Windsor, it retains the daily royal procession introduced in 1825 and the Royal Enclosure established in 1807, opening each edition with the Queen Anne Stakes named for its founder.

Royal Ascot's origins trace to Queen Anne, who in 1711 came across an expanse of open heath near Windsor Castle that she judged, in her own words, ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch, and announced plans for a new race meeting through The London Gazette that July.
