The story

Cowes Week in Cowes

The world's largest sailing regatta of its kind, held in the Solent off Cowes on the Isle of Wight each August since 1826, when seven cutters raced for a gold cup organised by the Royal Yacht Club. Now staging up to forty daily races for around seven hundred and fifty boats, it has run almost every year since, interrupted only by the two World Wars and 2020.

Cowes Week traces to 10 August 1826, when seven cutters gathered off Cowes Castle on the Isle of Wight to compete for a gold cup, a race organised by the Royal Yacht Club, as it was then known, and advertised beforehand in the Southampton Town and Country Herald.
