Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon
The largest Highland games gathering held anywhere in Scotland, staged at Dunoon Stadium on the Cowal Peninsula each final weekend of August since 1894. Massed pipe bands, heavy athletics and Highland dancing draw around twenty thousand visitors to a small Argyll town reached by ferry across the Firth of Clyde.
Cowal Highland Gathering traces to a meeting held on the fourth of April 1894 at Dunoon's Waverley Hotel, where local organiser Robert Cameron and others planned the event that would become the modern gathering, building on an earlier, less formal tradition of Highland games recorded in the town since 1871.
