The story

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Edinburgh

A massed military and pipe band spectacle staged on the floodlit esplanade of Edinburgh Castle each August, running since 1950. Pipers, drummers and international military bands perform choreographed set pieces, closing with a lone piper's lament from the battlements, drawing sell-out crowds well ahead of the festival season.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo began in 1950 as the British Army's contribution to the Edinburgh International Festival, itself only three years old at the time, building on a 1947 pageant called The King's Men staged on the Castle Esplanade by Lieutenant Colonel George Malcolm of Poltalloch.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The tattoo has retained its lone-piper lament closing sequence, performed from the castle battlements in darkness, as its signature moment since the format was established, an image now widely recognised beyond Scotland itself

02

The mystery stays covered

Its entirely outdoor staging on a purpose-built esplanade arena distinguishes it from every other major Edinburgh summer festival event, meaning performances proceed regardless of weather, and its programme draws military bands and display teams from a different international mix of countries each year rather than a fixed roster

What moves first

Living ritual

The closing lone piper's lament from the castle battlements and the massed pipes and drums entrance have remained consistent features of the tattoo's programme since its early decades
