Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show in Grasmere
A traditional Lake District sports day held in Grasmere each August, running as a regular annual fixture since 1868 with breaks only for the two World Wars. Grown out of the Grasmere Sheep Fair, it centres on the Guides Race up Silver How, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, and Hound Trails.
Grasmere Lakeland Sports grew out of the annual Grasmere Sheep Fair, a mid-nineteenth-century gathering held on the first Tuesday of September that brought shepherds, stone-wallers and farmhands seeking work together to mark the end of the working season with informal social competition.
