Haxey Hood in Haxey
Played each January sixth since a fourteenth-century legend involving Lady de Mowbray's wind-blown silk hood, the Haxey Hood sees a dense rugby-like scrum called the sway push a leather tube toward one of four village pubs, with no time limit and only two rules, the hood cannot be thrown or run with, ending only when a landlord touches it from his own doorstep.
Legend traces the Haxey Hood to a gust of wind in the fourteenth century, when Lady de Mowbray's silk riding hood blew off as she rode between Haxey and Westwoodside, and thirteen local men chased it down and returned it to her with such exaggerated chivalry that she was amused enough to donate thirteen acres of land on the condition that the chase be re-enacted every year afterward.
