Up Helly Aa Lerwick in Lerwick

A Viking-themed fire festival held in Lerwick on the last Tuesday of January, in which up to a thousand costumed guizers march through the streets by torchlight before burning a specially built galley. Its Norse imagery is a Victorian-era addition to an older, disorderly local tar-barrelling tradition suppressed in the 1870s.

Up Helly Aa's roots lie not in ancient Viking ritual, despite its now-famous Norse imagery, but in disorderly Victorian street tradition: young men in Lerwick had for decades marked the end of the Yule season by dragging barrels of burning tar on sledges through the town's narrow streets, a practice that caused enough property damage and disorder that it was suppressed between 1874 and 1880.
