The Boat Race in London

An annual rowing race between Oxford and Cambridge universities on the River Thames, first rowed in 1829 and contested every year since 1856. The women's race, dating to 1927, has run on the same day and course as the men's since 2015, with the combined event formally named The Boat Race since 2018.

The Boat Race began in 1829 after Charles Merivale, a student at St John's College, Cambridge, challenged his old school friend Charles Wordsworth, then at Christ Church, Oxford, to row a match between the two universities somewhere near London during the Easter vacation.
