The story

Padstow Obby Oss in Padstow

Padstow's May Day custom sends two costumed hobby horses, the Old Oss and the Blue Ribbon Oss, through the town's narrow streets from dawn to dusk, prodded by club-wielding Teasers and trailed by accordion bands singing the traditional Night and Morning Songs. The two processions converge at the town maypole in the evening for the ritual death and resurrection of the Osses.

Padstow's May Day custom begins before dawn, when townspeople gather outside the Golden Lion Inn to sing the Night Song, and by sunrise the streets are hung with greenery and a maypole stands dressed at the centre of town.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Padstow runs two separate hobby-horse processions in parallel rather than one, the Old Oss and the Blue Ribbon Oss, each with its own band, song and following, so the town effectively hosts two competing traditions on the same day

02

The mystery stays covered

The Oss itself is a stylised horse built from a circular frame and black cape topped with a fearsome mask, and its Teaser carries a painted club used to direct its lunges into the crowd

03

The city starts moving

The custom is sung rather than narrated: the Night Song opens the day before dawn outside the Golden Lion, and the Morning Song accompanies the processions until the Osses are ritually laid to rest at the maypole after dark
