The story

Aiken Steeplechase in Aiken

The Aiken Spring Steeplechase is the centerpiece of the Aiken Triple Crown, a March weekend of jump racing at Bruce's Field in Aiken, South Carolina. Held annually since 1967, the race draws thousands of tailgaters to watch thoroughbreds clear National Fences in a town long known as a winter training ground for hunters and jumpers.

Long before Aiken had a steeplechase, it had horses.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Aiken has drawn horsemen since the late 1800s, when wealthy Northern families such as the Whitneys and Hitchcocks wintered here for the sandy soil and mild climate, earning the town its old nickname as a winter equestrian retreat

02

The mystery stays covered

The Steeplechase is the middle leg of the Aiken Triple Crown, sandwiched between the Aiken Trials and Pacers and Polo on consecutive March weekends, and it is run under National Steeplechase Association rules with jockeys and trainers who circuit the Mid-Atlantic racing calendar

03

The city starts moving

The elaborate tailgate spreads along the rail, set up hours before the first race, are as much a part of the day as the racing itself
