River of Lights in Albuquerque
River of Lights is Albuquerque's largest holiday light display, staged every winter at the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden. Since it began in 1997, the walk-through show has grown to more than 800 illuminated displays and sculptures spread across the garden's paths, drawing over 120,000 visitors each season. Proceeds from ticket sales help fund the ABQ BioPark, making the event both a holiday tradition and an annual fundraiser for the city-run park system.
The ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden was still a relatively young addition to Albuquerque's park system when, in 1997, staff and volunteers strung up the first version of what would become River of Lights.
