Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival in Becket

Jacob's Pillow is a summer dance festival and National Historic Landmark campus in Becket, Massachusetts, founded in 1931 when modern dance pioneer Ted Shawn bought the former farm as a retreat for his all-male dance company. Now the only dance entity to hold National Historic Landmark District status, it presents international dance across indoor and outdoor stages each summer and trains young dancers through its on-site school.

Long before it became a dance destination, the hilltop property in Becket, Massachusetts, was a farm settled in 1790 by Jacob Carter III; the zigzagging road up to it became known as Jacob's Ladder, and a pillow-shaped rock on the land eventually gave the farm its lasting name, Jacob's Pillow.
