The story

Musikfest in Bethlehem

Musikfest is a ten-day, mostly free music festival held every August in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, since 1984. Organized by the nonprofit ArtsQuest, it fills more than a dozen stages across the city's eighteenth-century Moravian downtown and the former Bethlehem Steel plant with rock, country, jazz, blues, gospel, and polka acts. Billed as the nation's largest non-gated free music festival, it draws visitors from across the country each summer.

It is one of Pennsylvania's biggest and most recognizable public festivals.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Musikfest's defining trait is scale without gates: rather than fencing off one field, it spreads across more than a dozen stages threaded through Bethlehem's historic Moravian core, a settlement founded in 1741

02

The mystery stays covered

Nearly every venue carries the German suffix Platz, a nod to the city's German and Moravian roots, from the 300-table Festplatz, where a polka band plays nightly, to the craft-focused Handwerkplatz

03

The city starts moving

Its one ticketed venue, Steel Stage, sits on the reclaimed site of Bethlehem Steel, pairing touring headliners with the site's old blast furnaces

04

The water draws everyone in

Proceeds fund ArtsQuest's Banana Factory arts center, and the festival even inspired plot elements of the film Killian and the Comeback Kids
