Little 500 in Bloomington

The Little 500 is a track cycling relay race held every April at Bill Armstrong Stadium on the Indiana University campus in Bloomington. What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Little 500 is best known outside Indiana as the inspiration for the 1979 Academy Award winning film Breaking Away, which dramatized the rivalry between working-class Bloomington townies and Indiana University fraternity teams

02

The mystery stays covered

That fictional rivalry has a real echo in the Cutters, an independent team of Bloomington locals that has won the men's race fifteen times since forming in the early 1980s, more than any other team in race history

03

The city starts moving

Proceeds fund scholarships for working Indiana University students, tying the spectacle directly to the university's mission

04

The water draws everyone in

A separate Women's Little 500, first run in 1988, gives the event two full fields of competitive teams rather than a single marquee race
