The story

Colorado MahlerFest in Boulder

Colorado MahlerFest is an annual Boulder event, running since 1988, devoted each year to a single major symphonic work by composer Gustav Mahler. It is one of only two North American arts organizations to hold the Gold Medal of the International Gustav Mahler Society, alongside the New York Philharmonic.

Most classical music festivals build a season around variety, a broad sampling of composers and eras meant to appeal to as wide an audience as possible.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rather than programming a broad classical season, MahlerFest builds its entire annual identity around one Mahler symphony or major work at a time, a focus that has let it become a genuine destination for Mahler specialists and scholars rather than a general-audience orchestral series

02

The mystery stays covered

Founded by conductor Robert Olson, who led it until his 2015 retirement and was succeeded by Kenneth Woods, the festival has premiered new critical editions and completions of Mahler's works, including a revised performing version of the unfinished Tenth Symphony, and runs an annual symposium featuring leading Mahler scholars alongside a mentoring program for young conductors, the Mahler Conducting Fellowship
