The story

Brainerd NHRA Nationals in Brainerd

The Brainerd NHRA Nationals, currently sponsored as the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, is a professional drag racing event held each August at Brainerd International Raceway northwest of Brainerd, Minnesota. Top Fuel dragsters, Funny Cars, and Pro Stock cars compete on the track's quarter-mile strip, part of the NHRA's national touring championship series. The 2026 edition is scheduled as the penultimate race of the regular season.

Brainerd International Raceway traces its origins to July 1968, when road racers George Montgomery and Bud Stahel cleared a wooded site on the south side of North Long Lake, northwest of Brainerd, Minnesota, and opened a track they named Donnybrooke Speedway.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Brainerd International Raceway's drag strip has a reputation among racers as one of the fastest in the world, a status built over decades: Tony Schumacher set a widely cited quarter-mile speed record there in 2005, and further Funny Car national records followed in 2016 and 2017

02

The mystery stays covered

The track's history stretches back to 1968, when it opened as Donnybrooke Speedway before being renamed in 1973, and the NHRA began staging a national event there in 1982, with Shirley Muldowney among the first Top Fuel winners

03

The city starts moving

Drag racing veteran John Force has won at Brainerd eleven times, making the event something of a proving ground for the sport's biggest names, all set against the relative remoteness of Minnesota's north-woods lakes country rather than a big-city market
