The story

Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston

The Southeastern Wildlife Exposition, known as SEWE, is a three-day nature and wildlife art show held each February across five downtown Charleston venues. Founded in 1983 and now in its fifth decade, SEWE combines a juried fine-art gallery with live birds-of-prey flight demonstrations, dog-sport competitions, and fly-fishing exhibitions, drawing around 35,000 visitors to what organizers call the largest event of its kind in the country.

Each February, five separate venues across downtown Charleston briefly turn into a single, sprawling celebration of wildlife art and outdoor sport.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

SEWE's range across an entire city center rather than a single venue is unusual for a wildlife art show: Marion Square anchors the event with its fine art gallery and cooking demonstrations, while Brittlebank Park, the Gaillard Center, and downtown hotels each host their own programming

02

The mystery stays covered

Live-animal demonstrations give it a sporting-event energy that a gallery show alone would lack, from the Center for Birds of Prey's raptor flight shows over Marion Square to DockDogs long-jump competitions and working retriever and herding demonstrations

03

The city starts moving

The juried Fine Art Gallery, drawing wildlife and nature artists from around the country to compete for sales and recognition, remains the event's centerpiece and gives SEWE a credibility with collectors that pure outdoor spectacle events rarely achieve
