The story

Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga

Riverbend Festival was an annual outdoor music festival held on the Tennessee River waterfront in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee, produced by the nonprofit Friends of the Festival. Founded in 1982 at Ross's Landing, it ran each summer for over four decades with multiple stages, including a floating barge stage on the river. Organizers announced a 'temporary pause' after the 2023 edition, and as of the most recent reporting found, the festival has not resumed; a December 2025 newspaper article referred to it as 'now-defunct.'

Riverbend Festival traces its origin to 1982, when a stretch of downtown Chattanooga's riverfront near Ross's Landing was still lined with boarded-up buildings and largely ignored by residents.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Riverbend was Chattanooga's original large-scale music festival and one of the events credited with revitalizing the city's then-derelict riverfront starting in 1982

02

The mystery stays covered

Its signature feature was the Coca-Cola Stage, a converted barge that floated just offshore while audiences watched from amphitheater-style seating built into the riverbank

03

The city starts moving

At its peak the festival ranked in the top 10 percent of festivals nationally and won multiple International Festivals and Events Association awards, including eight in a single year

04

The water draws everyone in

Organizers reported attendance across the festival's run topping 650,000 visitors, with single nights drawing around 80,000 people, and estimated the festival added roughly 800,000 dollars in local tax revenue and over 20 million dollars in regional economic impact each year before its pause
