Appalachian String Band Music Festival in Clifftop
The Appalachian String Band Music Festival transforms Camp Washington-Carver in Clifftop into a week-long campout each August for old-time fiddle and banjo music. Organized by the West Virginia Division of Culture and History, the gathering centers on individual and band string-music competitions, but its real character comes from the informal, round-the-clock jamming that spreads across the campground's wooded sites.
The Appalachian String Band Music Festival grew out of a fiddlers' contest that the West Virginia Division of Culture and History expanded into a dedicated old-time music gathering at Camp Washington-Carver, a former African American 4-H camp in the mountains near Clifftop.
