The story

Viva El Paso in El Paso

Viva! El Paso is not a street festival but an outdoor musical theatrical production, performed nearly continuously since 1978 in the McKelligon Canyon amphitheater. Through dance, drama, narration, and song, it dramatizes more than four hundred years of El Paso's history, from indigenous settlers through Spanish colonization to the present, and marked its forty-fifth season in 2026 under a partnership including UTEP, El Paso Live, and El Paso Community College.

Its amphitheater setting and borderland heritage content make it a meaningful cultural row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Viva! El Paso stands apart from typical festivals because it is a scripted, staged musical drama rather than a fairground event: performers act out El Paso's layered history, following two lovers who move through centuries of change, from indigenous settlement through Spanish, Mexican, and modern eras

02

The mystery stays covered

The production has run almost every year since 1978, when Hector Serrano created it for the Los Pobres Bilingual Theatre Repertory Company

03

The city starts moving

After a funding hiatus in 2014, playwright Marty Martin rewrote the script for a 2016 relaunch through a partnership between UTEP, El Paso Live, the El Paso Community Foundation, and El Paso Community College, with new arrangements by Jim Ward and Cody Ritchey

04

The water draws everyone in

Staged under open sky in McKelligon Canyon, it makes the desert landscape part of the storytelling
