The story

Falmouth Road Race in Falmouth

The Falmouth Road Race is a seven-mile course from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights that has drawn elite international runners since bartender Tommy Leonard founded it in 1973, inspired by Frank Shorter's Olympic marathon win. Now capped near thirteen thousand runners through a lottery, it runs each August and includes a wheelchair division and a full weekend of companion races.

Tommy Leonard, a bartender and runner who split his time between Boston and Falmouth, founded the Falmouth Road Race in August 1973 after watching Frank Shorter win Olympic marathon gold the previous year, an inspiration that led him to organize a seven-mile run along the coastal route from Woods Hole to Falmouth Heights.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few American road races combine Falmouth's blend of elite international competition and a hometown atmosphere: the same seven-mile course that has drawn Olympic-caliber Kenyan and Ethiopian runners for decades also caps entries partly through a lottery that reserves slots for Falmouth residents

02

The mystery stays covered

Race director Dave McGillivray, who also directs the Boston Marathon, has helped keep the event's logistics and prestige on par with far larger city marathons despite its small-town course

03

The city starts moving

Its wheelchair division, presented by Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod, has hosted course records by athletes including Daniel Romanchuk and Tatyana McFadden, giving the race a serious competitive wheelchair-racing pedigree alongside its open field
