Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in Haines
The Alaska Bald Eagle Festival in Haines celebrates the Gathering of the Eagles, when thousands of bald eagles converge on the Chilkat River to feed on a late salmon run, historically drawing over 3,000 birds to the nearby preserve. Hosted by the American Bald Eagle Foundation, the multi-day event mixes guided viewing trips with wildlife workshops and an eagle-release auction.
Every fall, a stretch of the Chilkat River near Haines does something unusual: it stays open when the rest of the region begins to freeze.
