Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale in Hilo

Held each July at the Edith Kanakaole Multi-Purpose Stadium, the Hilo Orchid Society Show and Sale is the largest orchid show in Hawaii, running well past its 70th edition. Individual growers and commercial nurseries display thousands of blooms judged under American Orchid Society standards, alongside lectures, demonstrations, hula performances, and a marketplace where visitors can buy orchids grown specifically for the Big Island's varied elevations and climates.

Orchids arrived in Hawaii as an import, first as ornamental curiosities brought by traders and missionaries in the nineteenth century, but the islands' volcanic soil and layered climates, from steamy coastal Hilo to misty upland forest, turned out to be extraordinarily well suited to growing them.
