The story

RBC Heritage in Hilton Head Island

RBC Heritage is a PGA Tour golf tournament held each April at Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines Resort on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, the week after The Masters. First played in 1969 with Arnold Palmer as its inaugural winner, it is one of only five PGA Tour invitational events and is best known for awarding its champion a tartan plaid jacket rather than a traditional trophy.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The tournament's signature tradition, presenting the winner with a plaid tartan jacket rather than a conventional trophy, traces back to an 18th-century print of a Scottish golfer that inspired the original design, and the event has built an entire fan culture, branded PLAIDNATION, around roughly 120,000 spectators who wear plaid to the tournament each year

02

The mystery stays covered

As one of only five PGA Tour invitational events, it fields a reduced, elite roster of around 70 players, and its position immediately following The Masters each April gives it an outsized share of that week's momentum among the sport's biggest stars

03

The city starts moving

A ceremonial cannon-fired opening tee shot from the defending champion, a rarity on the PGA Tour outside The Masters itself, adds further pageantry rarely matched by other regular tour stops
