Molokai Hoe in Honolulu

The Molokai Hoe is an annual outrigger canoe race first held in 1952, sending six-person crews approximately 41 miles across the Kaiwi Channel from Hale O Lono Harbor on Molokai to Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. Organized by the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association, it functions as the men's world championship of outrigger canoe racing, drawing crews from Hawaii, Tahiti, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and beyond each October.

The Molokai Hoe traces back to October 1952, when three koa outrigger canoes launched from Kawakiu Bay on Molokai's northwest shore, each paddled by six men, bound for Waikiki across roughly 38 miles of open Pacific.
