The Indianapolis 500, run every Memorial Day weekend at Indianapolis Motor Speedway since 1911, is a 500-mile IndyCar race billed as the greatest spectacle in racing. It draws the largest single-day attendance of any sporting event in the world. The race remains the centerpiece of the city's entire Month of May civic calendar.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted its first 500-mile race in 1911, when Ray Harroun won driving the Marmon Wasp, a car credited with introducing the rear-view mirror to motorsport as a way to compete without a riding mechanic watching for traffic behind him.
