The story

Ithaca Porchfest in Ithaca

Ithaca Porchfest began in 2007 when neighbors Gretchen Hildreth and Lesley Greene put about twenty musicians on residential porches across Fall Creek and Northside, creating a free, walkable music festival with no central stage or tickets. Andy Adelewitz joined as co-organizer in 2013, and the concept has since spread to more than 220 communities across the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Two neighbors chatting on their doorsteps in Ithaca, New York's Fall Creek neighborhood came up with an idea in 2007 that would eventually spread to more than 220 communities across three countries: put local musicians on residential porches and let people walk from house to house to hear them.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Porchfest's core innovation is structural: rather than one stage and a paying crowd, homeowners across Fall Creek and Northside volunteer their own porches, musicians sign up for short sets throughout the day, and attendees design their own walking route using a published schedule

02

The mystery stays covered

That decentralized format, invented on a doorstep by Gretchen Hildreth and Lesley Greene in 2007, has proven unusually portable, spawning independently organized Porchfests in over 220 other communities that each adapted the concept to their own streets

03

The city starts moving

Ithaca's version has grown from about twenty acts at its founding to roughly 160 performances in recent years, all still free and open to the public with no central gate or ticket required
