Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona

The Ironman World Championship is the annual culmination of the Ironman triathlon series, held in Kailua-Kona on Hawaii Island since 1981, combining a 2.4-mile ocean swim in Kailua Bay, a 112-mile bike ride across lava fields to Hawi and back, and a 26.2-mile marathon finishing on Alii Drive. After several years in which the men's and women's championships were split between Kona and Nice, France, the race returns to a single unified event in Kailua-Kona in 2026.

The Ironman triathlon began in 1978 on Oahu, combining three existing Hawaii endurance events, the Waikiki Roughwater Swim, the Around-Oahu Bike Race, and the Honolulu Marathon, into a single grueling day meant to settle an argument among Hawaii athletes about which endurance sport, swimming, cycling, or running, produced the fittest competitors.
