National Trout Festival in Kalkaska

The National Trout Festival in Kalkaska, Michigan, began in 1935 with a Depression-era parade of forty floats and the coronation of the town's first Trout King, timed to the opening of Michigan's trout season each spring. Canceled only during World War II, the festival now runs the last weekend of April with a children's fishing contest, carnival, parades, fireworks, and a flea market.

Kalkaska crowned its first Trout King, Peter Emanuel Ummel, on May 1, 1935, the second day of a brand-new festival built to promote local trout fishing during the depths of the Great Depression.
