Maui Whale Festival in Kihei

The Maui Whale Festival is a winter-long series of events run by the Pacific Whale Foundation, capped by World Whale Day, a week of programming culminating in a Sunday parade along South Kihei Road. Now past its 45th anniversary, it combines specialty whale-watching cruises, beach and community volunteer service, and a family parade with ocean-themed floats and costumes to mark the humpback whales' winter migration to Maui waters.

Every winter, North Pacific humpback whales leave the cold, food-rich waters off Alaska and swim roughly 3,000 miles south to the warm, shallow channels around Maui, where they breed, give birth, and nurse calves before the long swim back.
