The story

Desert Daze in Lake Perris

Desert Daze was a psychedelic and experimental music festival held at the Lake Perris State Recreation Area in Moreno Valley from 2018 through 2022, known for abstract art installations and headliners including Tame Impala, Iggy Pop, and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. The festival has not been held since 2022, with a planned 2024 edition cancelled and no event announced for 2025 or 2026.

Its curated sound and lakeside/desert setting give it a strong niche identity.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Founder Phil Pirrone, a veteran of the post-hardcore scene, built Desert Daze around a genuinely unusual premise for a music festival: extended time together in the desert as a deliberate creative environment, describing the event's philosophy as a kind of anti-festival festival that favored abstract, psychedelic art installations and a genre-specific lineup, neo-psychedelia, desert rock, experimental, dream pop, art pop, hip-hop, lo-fi, and noise music, over the broad commercial programming typical of larger festivals

02

The mystery stays covered

Its most memorable single moment came in 2022, when Tame Impala performed their album Lonerism in full for its tenth anniversary, the only time the band has ever staged that specific performance, at what turned out to be the festival's final full edition to date

03

The city starts moving

The festival's repeated relocations, from Desert Hot Springs to Mecca's Sunset Ranch Oasis to Joshua Tree's Institute of Mentalphysics before settling at Lake Perris in 2018, trace an ongoing search for a site that could match its ambitions, a search that ultimately outpaced the festival's financial sustainability
