Lancaster Festival in Lancaster

The Lancaster Festival brings ten days of orchestral concerts, pop headliners, and community arts events to Lancaster, Ohio each July, centered on the Ohio University-Lancaster campus. Founded in 1984 as an outdoor 'Picnic and Pops' concert, it grew into a full festival in 1985 and now runs its own professional orchestra alongside an ArtWalk, chamber music, dance, and a juried art competition.

The Lancaster Festival built its own professional orchestra from scratch: the Lancaster Festival Orchestra formed in 1988, drawing 65 musicians from 38 orchestras nationwide, and by 2010 won the first-ever American Prize for Orchestral Performance in the professional division, with conductor Gary Sheldon separately winning the American Prize for Conducting weeks later
