National Jug Band Jubilee in Louisville
The National Jug Band Jubilee is a music festival celebrating jug band music, a genre with deep roots in early twentieth-century Louisville, held at the Brown-Forman Amphitheater at Waterfront Park. After a period of inactivity, organizers announced the festival's return in 2026 with a capital campaign kickoff event and a planned October 3 celebration.
Jug band music emerged in the early twentieth century in cities including Louisville and Memphis, built around ensembles that combined traditional string instruments like fiddle, banjo, and guitar with homemade or improvised instruments such as jugs blown for bass tones, washboards played with thimbles for percussion, and kazoos or spoons, a resourceful musical tradition that grew directly out of the limited access to formal instruments among the Black and working-class communities who developed the genre.
