The story

Lowell Folk Festival in Lowell

The Lowell Folk Festival fills four main outdoor stages and other locations across downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, every year on the last full weekend of July with traditional music, dance, craft demonstrations, street parades, and ethnic foods. It grew out of the National Council for the Traditional Arts' touring National Folk Festival, which visited Lowell from 1987 to 1989, and has continued locally since 1990 as one of the largest free folk festivals in the country.

Lowell built its identity on the Merrimack River's mill power, drawing waves of immigrant workers from French Canada, Ireland, Greece, Portugal, and later Southeast Asia into its brick canal district.
