The story

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester

Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is a four-day camping festival held each June at Great Stage Park, a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. Launched in 2002 by AC Entertainment and Superfly, it takes its name from a Creole phrase for a really good time, borrowed from a Dr. John album. The festival spans genres from rock and hip-hop to bluegrass and electronic music across dozens of stages.

Bonnaroo began in 2002 as a joint venture between Nashville-based promoter AC Entertainment, led by Ashley Capps, and the firm Superfly, co-founded by Kerry Black, Rick Farman, Richard Goodstone, and Jonathan Mayers.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Bonnaroo's identity starts with its setting: a 700-acre working farm outside Manchester, Tennessee, now called Great Stage Park, where the festival splits into Centeroo, the ticketed concert zone holding stages like the 80,000-capacity What Stage, and Outeroo, the surrounding campgrounds where most attendees camp for all four days

02

The mystery stays covered

The name itself is a piece of music history, a Creole phrase for a great time borrowed from Dr

03

The city starts moving

John's 1974 album Desitively Bonnaroo as a tribute to New Orleans

04

The water draws everyone in

Rolling Stone once ranked the festival's 2002 launch among the 50 moments that changed rock and roll

05

The old stones answer

Bonnaroo also built an environmental record early, winning recognition from A Greener Festival and funding local nonprofits through the Bonnaroo Works Fund
