Miles City Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City
The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, nicknamed Cowboy Mardi Gras, is a four-day western celebration held the third weekend of May in Miles City, Montana. Dating to 1951, it combines the actual auction of rough stock destined for professional rodeo with PRCA match bronc riding, wild horse races, pari-mutuel horse racing, a trade show, a Main Street parade, and a concert, making it one of the signature rodeo-industry events in the northern Plains.
The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale grew out of a practical problem: eastern Montana ranchers and stock contractors needed a reliable way to test and sell rough stock capable of bucking hard enough for professional rodeo.
