The story

Miles City Bucking Horse Sale in Miles City

The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale, nicknamed Cowboy Mardi Gras, is a four-day western celebration held the third weekend of May in Miles City, Montana. Dating to 1951, it combines the actual auction of rough stock destined for professional rodeo with PRCA match bronc riding, wild horse races, pari-mutuel horse racing, a trade show, a Main Street parade, and a concert, making it one of the signature rodeo-industry events in the northern Plains.

The Miles City Bucking Horse Sale grew out of a practical problem: eastern Montana ranchers and stock contractors needed a reliable way to test and sell rough stock capable of bucking hard enough for professional rodeo.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The sale began in 1951 almost by accident, when Les Boe ended up with a set of horses and Bob Pauley suggested they simply buck them, a moment credited with raising bucking-stock quality across professional rodeo ever since

02

The mystery stays covered

Unlike most rodeos, the sale is built around a literal livestock auction: unbroken, rank horses are tested in the arena, then sold to stock contractors who supply major rodeos, meaning animals bucking here this weekend may buck on PRCA circuits next season

03

The city starts moving

The three-day horse sale has grown into a four-day festival nicknamed Cowboy Mardi Gras, adding a kickoff concert, mutton bustin' for kids, a young-stock futurity, wild horse races, and two PRCA match bronc rides
