The story

Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon in Milwaukee

Established in 1973 as the Wisconsin Mayfair Marathon and reconstituted as the Lakefront Marathon in 1982 by the Badgerland Striders running club, the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon is an October point-to-point race crossing the city's iconic Hoan Bridge. The course starts at the Italian Community Center and finishes at Henry Maier Festival Park, with more than 40 percent of the route running along Lake Michigan's shoreline.

Milwaukee's marathon tradition began in 1973 under the name Wisconsin Mayfair Marathon, a point-to-point race that in its inaugural running followed a scenic course along Lake Michigan from Grafton down to Milwaukee.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The Hoan Bridge crossing is the race's defining feature: Milwaukee Lakefront is the only marathon that runs over this elevated span across the Milwaukee harbor, giving runners sweeping views of the city skyline and Lake Michigan unavailable on any other course in the region

02

The mystery stays covered

The point-to-point route, rather than a looping course, means runners experience genuinely varied scenery, from Grafton-area origins in the race's earliest years to today's shoreline parks, rather than repeating the same streets

03

The city starts moving

A 2022 permit dispute that forced the official race's cancellation, met by a grassroots, runner-organized Not The Lakefront Marathon, revealed how deeply embedded the event has become in Milwaukee's running community identity
