The story

Minnesota Fringe Festival in Minneapolis

The Minnesota Fringe Festival is an eleven-day, nonjuried performing arts festival held in Minneapolis every summer, typically over the first two weeks of August. Founded in 1994 by Bob McFadden and run from venues around the city, it is the largest nonjuried fringe festival in the United States and the third-largest Fringe festival in North America, presenting hundreds of short, independently produced shows.

Minnesota Fringe arrived as part of a broader wave: after Seattle launched the first American fringe festival in 1991, followed by Orlando and San Francisco in the next two years, Minneapolis got its own version in 1994.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Minnesota Fringe is nonjuried, meaning shows are selected by lottery rather than an artistic committee, so professional theater companies perform alongside first-time solo artists, dancers, comedians, and experimental collectives with equal footing on the schedule

02

The mystery stays covered

Every show runs sixty minutes or less across five performances spread over the eleven-day run, and performing companies keep a majority share, currently 65 percent, of their own box office revenue rather than handing most of it to the festival

03

The city starts moving

As a founding member of the United States Association of Fringe Festivals, Minnesota Fringe helped establish the American fringe-festival model that later spread to other cities, continuing a lineage that started with Seattle's fringe in 1991
