Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow
The University of Idaho's Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival has run since 1967, growing from a single-day student event into one of the largest and oldest educational jazz festivals in the world. Renamed in 1985 to honor jazz legend Lionel Hampton, who performed there for years, the multi-day event in Moscow now draws hundreds of student ensembles and headline professional performers each spring.
The University of Idaho launched its jazz festival in 1967 as a modest, single-day event featuring 15 student groups and one evening concert, part of a broader effort to build serious jazz education at a public university in a small Idaho college town.
