The story

Hub City Sounds in New Brunswick

Hub City Sounds is a free, multi-weekend performing, visual, and culinary arts festival series held across New Brunswick, New Jersey, from August through October. Now in its second decade, it is produced by the New Brunswick Cultural Center and Arts New Brunswick, with each weekend built around a different cultural community, from a Caribbean festival with a jerk chicken cook-off to a Mexican Independence Day celebration and an Indian Janmashtami festival.

Its city-backed cultural programming makes it a useful Central Jersey row.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Rather than a single event, Hub City Sounds is a sequence of distinct neighborhood festivals staged at parks and plazas across New Brunswick, each curated around a different community's traditions

02

The mystery stays covered

The Janmashtami Festival brings Northern and Southern Indian dance and Bollywood Zumba to Livingston Avenue, the Caribbean Festival fills Recreation Park with reggae, soca, and calypso alongside a jerk chicken tasting competition, and Mexico en New Brunswick marks Mexican Independence Day with El Grito at Boyd Park in partnership with the Mexican Consulate

03

The city starts moving

The series also folds in the Middlesex County Jazz Festival and a Latinx Heritage Month celebration, making it one of the more culturally layered free festival series in central New Jersey
