The story

New Haven Jazz Festival in New Haven

For nine years, from 2008 through 2016, the nonprofit Jazz Haven produced a free New Haven Jazz Festival each August on the New Haven Green, in cooperation with the City of New Haven. From 2011 onward the concept expanded into a week-to-ten-day citywide jazz series across restaurants, clubs, and bars, and evidence suggests the festival has since returned in some form, though its exact current status could not be fully confirmed.

Jazz Haven, a New Haven nonprofit dedicated to promoting jazz culture, has worked since its founding in 1996 through collaborations with artists, schools, and community organizations.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

The place changes

The festival built a deliberate bridge between world-class touring jazz talent and New Haven's own musical community: internationally known performers such as Joe Lovano, T

02

The mystery stays covered

Monk, Wayne Escoffery, and the Brubeck Brothers played the New Haven Green stage, while every festival opened by showcasing local youth performers, including children playing instruments or reciting jazz poetry, reflecting organizer Jazz Haven's stated belief that all jazz is local

03

The city starts moving

Expanding from a single evening into a multi-venue, week-plus citywide series from 2011 on also meant the festival pushed jazz performance directly into New Haven's restaurants, clubs, and bars rather than confining it to one outdoor stage
